First, if you don’t know where to start, just try targeting at HSK. HSK is the official Mandarin Chinese proficiency exam. It just like non-English speakers usually starts with cracking TOEFL or IELS to learn English. The exam is properly leveled by proficiency. Starters can chose level 1 or level 2 to start with. By targeting at HSK exam, you can always orient yourself along studying, and it is unlikely to lose yourself in nowhere. Normally, studying for a goal set is of more efficiency. Level 1 and Level 2 is not so difficult. If you get passed, it will encourage you to further your Chinese to the next level. If you think Chinese is too difficult, it most likely because you are entering from improper level. If you start from level 1 and level 2, I am sure you can easily get started.
If memerzing Chinese words become the biggest obstacle for you, you may try our apps to facilitate. The most important tip for memorization is repetition. Pull out your cell phone; Start up our app whenever you have 10 min free time. Listen one unit every time, and repeat it until your free time is up. You can do it when you are, for example, in the subway, waiting in a line, walking your dog, or dumping in the toilet. If you can repeat this 3 times a day, you will find yourself greatly progressing in memorizing the words.
Another tip is to review the words you learned just before sleeping. Study shows it is the prime time to intensify your memorization.
